Wine with a punch at Drakes Tabanco in London

Fellow wine clubber Lea and I went to Drakes Tabanco (3 Windmill Street, London W1T 2HY) for tapas and wine this week. I really recommend it if you haven’t been. We had a really beautiful and unusual white wine from Ribeira del Duero: a 2015 Alfredo Maestro Lovamor (Albillo) that was from the restaurant’s ‘walk on the wild side’ section of its amazing Spanish wine list. It was a rich yellow colour, very punchy (it smelt almost sherry-ish), and tasted of baked apples.

We thought we could only have one glass of it until we tasted it with food, and then were happy to polish off a second glass. Particularly good with the roast cauliflower salad (which was more interesting than it sounds).

I’d definitely liketo go back there to try some of the other unusual wines on the list. The food was amazing, and they have lots of wines by the glass (including 125 ml if you want to try different ones) and the carafe, and don’t charge you over the odds to have a half bottle. I loved it.
